Complete Sub Zero Error Code Reference Guide
The refrigerator or freezer compartment thermistor has failed. The control board can no longer accurately read or regulate compartment temperature. Causes temperature swings, overcooling, or failure to cool. Repair: thermistor replacement, $280–$420.
The condenser is running too hot. Caused by dirty condenser coils (most common), failed condenser fan motor, or blocked airflow. The system will shut down to prevent permanent damage. Repair: coil cleaning ($150–$250) or fan motor replacement ($300–$500).
The evaporator fan that circulates cold air through the refrigerator compartment has failed or is blocked. Fresh food compartment stops cooling; freezer may remain cold. One of the most common Sub Zero failures in Manhattan. Repair: fan motor replacement, $320–$520.
A fan motor (condenser or evaporator) is running below the required speed. Unit attempts to compensate but will eventually fail to maintain temperatures. The motor is wearing out and will fail completely without repair. Repair: fan motor replacement, $300–$520.
The condenser fan has stopped completely. Without the condenser fan, heat cannot be removed from the refrigeration system and the unit will overheat and stop cooling entirely. Requires immediate repair. Repair: condenser fan motor replacement, $300–$500.
The automatic defrost system has failed — either the defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or defrost control board. Frost will accumulate on the evaporator coils over days and eventually block airflow, causing the refrigerator to stop cooling. Repair: defrost system repair, $320–$550.
The fresh food compartment temperature sensor has failed. Similar to EC38 but specific to the refrigerator compartment. The control board is flying blind on fresh food temperature. Repair: thermistor replacement, $280–$420.
The freezer compartment temperature sensor has failed. Freezer temperature regulation is impaired. Food in the freezer is at risk of improper temperature. Repair: thermistor replacement, $280–$420.
What To Do When Your Sub Zero Shows an Error Code
- Write down the exact error code shown on the display. Take a photo if possible. Do not reset it yet.
- Check if food is safe — use a thermometer in both compartments. Above 40°F in the fresh food compartment = food safety risk.
- Do not power cycle to clear the code — the code will return immediately or the unit will fail silently.
- Call (888) 684-5837 — provide the error code when you call. Our technician will arrive knowing exactly what to diagnose.
Can I Reset a Sub Zero Error Code Myself?
Technically yes — you can power cycle the unit to temporarily clear the display. But the code will return within minutes to hours because the underlying hardware failure hasn't been fixed. Worse, after a manual reset, some Sub Zero units will operate silently at unsafe temperatures without displaying the code again, putting your food at risk.
Error codes are diagnostic tools. They tell us exactly which component failed. When a Manhattan homeowner calls us with "EC50," we already know the repair before we arrive. Don't erase that information — use it.

Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on the code and how long it's been there. Check the actual temperature in both compartments with a thermometer. Fresh food should be at or below 40°F; freezer at or below 0°F. If temperatures are unsafe, move food immediately. For most error codes, the unit will continue cooling for a period but will eventually fail completely without repair.
EC40 (condenser overtemperature) means your condenser is running too hot. First, check that the front grille at the bottom of the unit is clear of dust and debris — this is the condenser air intake. Do not block the space around the refrigerator. Then call us for a same-day diagnosis. EC40 is one of our most common repair calls in Manhattan and is typically resolved the same day.
Because the hardware component that the error code identifies has failed. Resetting the code clears the display but does not fix the component. The code returns because the component is still faulty. The only fix is to replace the failed component.
Sub Zero has produced many models over the decades and some have additional error codes not listed above. Call us at (888) 684-5837 with your exact code and model number and we'll identify it immediately.
